Most practitioner cream bases are 60–70% water held together by emulsifiers and a synthetic preservative system — phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, glyceryl caprylate — with your herbal extract added at the end. By the time you've blended a 20% infusion, your client is receiving roughly a third functional ingredient and two-thirds delivery vehicle.
The extracts themselves are hydroethanolic single-phase, which captures flavonoids and water-soluble actives but leaves the lipophilic fraction — triterpenoids, carotenoids, faradiol esters, fat-soluble vitamins — almost entirely behind.

The skin microbiome is the front line of barrier health, and it's the first thing a conventional cream base disrupts.
Water creates the conditions that demand preservatives, and broad-spectrum cosmetic preservatives don't distinguish between pathogenic microbes and the Staphylococcus epidermidis, Cutibacterium, and lactic acid bacteria that keep eczematous and compromised skin in balance.
Emulsifiers compound the problem by stripping the intercellular lipids the resident flora actually lives in.
An anhydrous, preservative-free, emulsifier-free system sidesteps all three: no water activity means no microbial risk and no need to sterilise the skin to protect the product; no surfactants means the lipid matrix the microbiome inhabits stays intact; and a sebum-matched base (tallow or the engineered sunflower system) feeds the barrier the same fatty acids the commensals are adapted to.
For atopic, rosacea-prone, and reactive skin in particular, leaving the microbiome alone isn't a passive choice — it's the active mechanism.

This system uses the latest technology to achieve much higher concentrations of active ingredients in all my botanical extracts.
Before ultrasonic processing, each botanical undergoes a proprietary pre-soak phase that unlocks water-soluble actives. Compounds that conventional oil infusion leaves behind entirely.
I use only New Zealand made, cold pressed, high oleic (monounsaturated) Extra Virgin Sunflower Oil in the oil phase.
The result is a genuinely full-spectrum extract containing both polar and lipophilic phytochemistry in a single stable oil format, with no water, no preservatives, and no emulsifiers.
